School Orchestra Shines at Birmingham concert

Once again, our wonderful orchestra shone this half-term, performing alongside five other schools at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire (RBC) in June.

This was the first time Leicestershire Music Hub and RBC had invited the school to take part in the event and, given they rarely choose schools that have previously participated, the occasion represented a real ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ opportunity for our talented musicians.

Guided by Music Lead Mrs Hussey, the 24-strong group – comprising students from Year 7 through to Year 10 – had been practising their chosen songs for two months and arrived at the iconic venue beaming with excitement.

Upon arrival, the group was taken on a tour before attending a workshop with a folk musician. Our students – in conjunction with those children from other schools – used small riffs to create new pieces of music together. They then had the opportunity to rehearse the songs they would be performing later that evening.

Soon, it was showtime!

In front of a packed audience, our students gave a rousing performance, singing three songs; ‘I Ain’t Worried’ (Top Gun: Maverick) by OneRepublic, ‘Don’t Start Now’ by Dua Lipa and a mash up of ‘A Message To You’ by The Specials and ‘On My Radio’ by The Selecter.

“It was a great opportunity to visit the college and perform with professionals and music college students,” explained Mrs Hussey.

“[It gave students] the chance to rehearse, compose [and] perform together as a large ensemble – several of [them] had not played with anyone else other than their teacher before.”

After their performance, some students were interviewed for the Leics Make Music Instagram account, the audio footage of which will soon be available on Lionheart Radio; click here to listen to our Trust-wide internet radio station.

A resounding success, the event was a fitting way to bring the curtain down on another outstanding year for our talented musical students.

We look forward to offering comparable opportunities to all our students next year!
