Students tackle university maths challenge

A small group of Year 8 students enjoyed a rewards trip to the University of Nottingham in July, where they participated in a series of challenging maths tasks alongside 120 students from other secondary schools.

Throughout the academic year, higher-attaining students had fun engaging in the Maths Circle, a series of challenging problem-solving questions supplied by Axiom – an organisation committed to instilling a passion for maths amongst young people.

Working with maths teacher Ms Jethwa for one hour every week, students used their intellect and applied their learned knowledge to tackle the questions and improve their deeper understanding of the subject. Those who attended the Maths Circle for the whole year were then invited to the event at the University of Nottingham.

The six students worked alongside children from other schools and together they tackled some difficult maths puzzles, strengthening their social and articulation skills.

Also, they were taken on a campus tour by one of the student ambassadors and given an insight into some of the opportunities available to those who opt to study maths at university.

It was a fun and insightful day and one that opened students’ eyes to the opportunities available to them in Higher Education.
