Trip to Granada, Spain

Humphrey Perkins recently took 30 students from Year 9, 10, and 11 on a five-day trip to Granada, Spain. The trip was primarily designed for students studying Spanish at GCSE level and aimed to provide them with an immersive experience of the Spanish language and culture.

The group arrived in Granada on the 31st of March and kicked off their adventure with a visit to the Parque de las Ciencias science park. Students were able to explore the interactive exhibits and learn about various scientific phenomena. Later on, the group visited the Alhambra, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the best-preserved example of medieval Islamic heritage in the world.

The students were also able to explore the Nerja caves, which boasts the biggest natural pillar in a cave and stunning rock formations. They also spent some time soaking up the sun on the beach at Nerja.

The trip coincided with Semana Santa (Holy Week), and the students had the opportunity to witness the processions on Palm Sunday and Holy Monday. They were able to see the intricate floats and religious imagery that are central to these events.

The students also took part in the Halsbury Adventure Quest, which involved a scavenger hunt in the city, followed by some free time for shopping and exploring in the Realejo and Albaicin districts of Granada. In the evenings, the group enjoyed a flamenco show with a tapas sharing menu, providing them with a first-hand experience of Spanish culture.

On the final day of the trip, the group visited the Málaga Alcazaba fortress and port area, where they were able to learn more about Spain's history and culture.

The trip provided the students with an opportunity to practice their Spanish speaking skills, particularly when ordering food at restaurants. It also gave them a deeper understanding of Spanish culture, including customs and festivals, which they had studied in their Year 10 course. The immersive experience of the trip will undoubtedly be a valuable asset for their continued learning of the Spanish language and culture.
