University Trip Lights Literary Spark

Earlier this month, six Humphrey Perkins students were fortunate to visit the University of Leicester for an illuminating school trip.

The Year 8s were joined by students from other Lionheart schools for a Trust-wide day that aimed to strengthen their understanding of 19th Century English literature – a topic they had all covered the previous term.

They listened intently to university lecturers and subject specialists, who gave enlightening talks centring on the time period, before moving around the campus and attending smaller seminar groups, which focused on short stories they had previously studied in class.

Students were even fortunate enough to visit the university’s special collection exhibits, where they gazed in awe at the Mugby Junction collection, in which Charles Dicken’s iconic short-story The Signalman was first published in 1866.

The day was a huge academic benefit; improving students’ wider understanding of the literary period and preparing them for their GCSE unit on Dickens in Key Stage 4.

It also provided them with an insight and a taster of university life. They worked together in small groups and got involved in seminar discussions where they were able to share their thoughts and ideas.

Reflecting upon their visit, students were suitably inspired, with many now considering applying to university in the future.

They displayed model behaviour all day and were outstanding role-models for the school. Well done!
